If I Am A Man of God

Let Fire Come Down From Heaven

These were the famous words spoken by Elijah, as you know, found in 2 Kings 1:10 and 12. To the king’s army captain who had come with 50 soldiers to arrest Elijah, the prophet had replied:

If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!

And fire shot out of the sky and did just that!

Elijah had earlier castigated the king for his repudiation of the Almighty God by going to seek help from Baal-Zebub, a foreign ‘god’. Every foreign god is an agent of Satan. So the man was giving homage to Satan, when he knew what Israel’s true God was capable of. This was blasphemy against the holy Spirit!

For that, God destroyed him.

This was judgement time. Why? Because God had sent a prophet to call the nation back to Him. God had demonstrated His supremacy on Mount Carmel (1 Ki 18). But still the nation forsook God and ignored what God said, despite the incontrovertible signs.

It is an equal day of ‘Elijah’ now. God predicted it long ago (Mal 4:5-6; Is 61:1-2).

When the Spirit is upon a prophet, when God has anointed his work, when He has sent him out (Is 61:1) and His call to repentance is rejected, judgment follows (61:2). What we think of as “acceptable” (because we like it) then becomes the opposite, yet it is still “acceptable” to God (61:2). The severity of God (Rom 11:22) decrees that it is very acceptable to Him to destroy those who oppose His words. It is “the day of vengeance of our God!” (61:2.)

God is the same today as yesterday (Heb 13:8). As Paul wrote, God is the same (Heb 1:12). He is just as vehement against sin and corruption. He has sent a prophet today, and He is burning people up just the same today! It sounds horrendous, and it is! But it is justifiable. Where wicked people stand in God’s way, trying to oppose Him, He burns them up in hot coals. I’m sure you have read these accounts in the MMG (Mighty Miracles of God) volumes. There are many!

On 26th November 2018, John reported how God destroyed Islamic gunmen who had insulted Him:

...They abused us, called us names, devil worshippers, illuminati, satanists. They kicked us and spat on us. But at midnight, when they had put the MM lits down to burn them, the matchstick that one of them lit to burn the genuine MM lits produced a big fire that consumed them (the gunmen) and no lit got burnt. Each ran away for help as a big fire covered them and burnt them to ashes.

These are the days of Elijah! Robin Mark’s very inspired composition finds its fulfilment every day, but very few are aware of what God is doing. How strange:

Who is blind but My servant...? (Is 42:19).

Well, they don’t have to be. The key to knowing is believing. Those who accept the prophet, who believe him, can receive the prophet’s reward (Matt 10:41), which is to understand the spiritual message and benefit from keeping it, just as Jesus declared:

Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book (Rev 22:7).

And the angel said:

...I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book... (Rev 22:9).

Why did the angel emphasise the prophets by specifically mentioning them? He could have just mentioned believers (“those who keep the words of this book”), for prophets are included in that number. No, that would not have been good enough. He drew attention to them because the church does not. The world rejects them, and repudiates their words of truth. Shame on the church if it follows that human failing!

God wants to send fire on the earth (Lk 12:49). He would far rather send the fire of His Spirit to refine you than the fire of His judgement. But the choice is with each person.

To the pure He will show Himself pure, but to the devious He shows Himself shrewd (Ps 18:26), for He comes to save the meek and humble (Ps 18:27).
