The Solution to FAMINE Britain and America have not known shortage of food for a very long time. But the world is about to plunge into grave troubles which will bring famine to these nations! On 8th September 2008 God gave me a dream that I was to rent a stand in an exhibition. This exhibit was not just to draw attention to the plight of millions around the world who face starvation, but to raise awareness of WHY. (Entire dream at the end.)
Why does famine stalk the earth?
The answer to that is what most prefer NOT to hear! Isn’t it amazing that the solutions to the world’s problems are not wanted?! It’s an irony that what is good for mankind, he resists and rejects, but what brings woe and destruction, he accepts!
The solution to famine is spiritual, not physical, just as its cause is spiritual, not merely physical.
You may not believe that, but it won’t alter the truth. The truth remains the same, as it always has. Jesus said God’s Word is truth (Jn 17:17).
Cause of Famine
The main cause of famine is identified in God’s Word as a result of rebellion against God. Although God does not enjoy seeing His creation suffer, He has to allow it to occur. In one sense it is punishment for wrongdoing that He cannot avert – unless the errant ones repent and turn from wrongdoing. Notice it:
It shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes... that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you (Deut 28:15).
Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country (28:16).
Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl (28:17).
Cursed shall be the fruit of your body and the produce of your land, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks (28:18).
Because God is ultimately in control of all that takes place on earth – despite the fact that He hates so much of it! – He is represented in Deuteronomy as being the one who brings it on:
Your heavens which are over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under your feet shall be iron (28:23). The Lord will change the rain of your land to powder and dust; from the heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed (28:24).
Why? Deuteronomy 11:13-28 explains.
...because of the wickedness of your doings in which you have forsaken Me (Deut 28:20).
When people do not want God in their lives, they descend into depravity, and God has no option but to let them reap the fruit of their own ways.
Wicked Rulership
Famines have changed the course of history. God used a famine to bring Joseph to prominence and greatness in Egypt (Gen 41); to draw Jacob’s descendants to that region (Gen 42-46) so that God could later work out His purpose, bringing that world power to nothing and delivering Israel.
It is God who gives "the dew of heaven, of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine" (Gen 27:28). And it is God who allows famine, just as He allows all people the freedom to do wrong – in the hope that they will learn to do right, turning away from wrong ways.
When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan (Prov 29:2). Egypt, for a while, rejoiced in the rule of Joseph, a righteous deliverer in time of need (Gen 41). He did not oppress the people. He cared for them.
In contrast, consider Robert Mugabe’s rule in Zimbabwe, which has turned that breadbasket of Africa into a hunger-stricken hellhole.
Leadership has much to do with whether a nation is blessed or cursed:
O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err [lead you astray], and destroy the way of your paths (Is 3:12).
Wicked rulers crush their subjects (Is 3:15) through oppressive wielding of power, or through inane policies and self-glorification. Look at the recent celebrations of the king of Swaziland, who bought four (or was it six?) new top-of-the-range BMWs to celebrate his birthday. He expects his poverty- stricken people to support his flamboyant ‘worship-me’ reign of self- indulgence, with his 13 wives, lavish palace and other opulent trappings.
Some western rulers are equally egoistic, but are discreet to mask their motives.
The policies of all human governments lead towards poverty and famine in the long run, because they ignore the moral fundamentals that underlie either blessing or curse. They think that by tinkering with the inner workings of the economy, pressing buttons and pulling switches, will make things better.
No. God has the final word.
Postponement does not solve problems, just as appeasement of evil likewise merely defers it.
People will finally come to see that what God told us in the Bible is true and, if nations had lived by it, they would have been blessed instead of cursed.
It’s the obduracy in human nature that keeps famine on the earth. Most people don’t want God. And among those who claim they do, even many of them do not want to hear Him tell them how to live!
The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it? (Jer 17:9.)
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be (Rom 8:7).
The Universal Moral Vacuum
The political leaders of the world do not give their subjects an appropriate moral lead. Most leaders are concerned more about securing their own power base than securing their country’s stability. Of course, I’m sure they would think they are doing something worthwhile for their nation, as they direct the affairs of the State. But they don’t see their own self-deceit. They don’t know that they are deluded.
And if they have any nagging doubts, they soon patch them up with a bit of positive thinking and talk.
The truth, however, is that mankind is sorely misguided and has no compass without God. He’s the One who gives true direction, both individually and to a nation.
Israel is our example and the Bible is our textbook on human mistakes versus God’s ideals. We read God’s lament in the Bible about Israel’s failure:
There is no one to guide her among all the sons she has brought forth; nor is there any who takes her by the hand among all the sons she has brought up (Is 51:18).
These two things have come to you; who will be sorry for you? – desolation and destruction, famine and sword... (Is 51:19.)
What the prophet mentions in verse 18 leads to the famine mentioned in verse 19. The moral vacuum in leadership allows famine to come.
You may be able to see many physical causes: bad weather, wrong decisions by government, war, floods, trade imbalances, economic mismanagement and stupid policies, bureaucratic bungling, crop- destroying pests, plagues, etc. But, when you trace the ultimate cause, before all these, the bottom line is always that people do not know God, do not obey Him and therefore don’t have His guidance or protection.
Where wickedness rules, the ultimate result is disaster. There may be many years of deferment, but eventually it comes, and it comes with a vengeance!
Therefore hear this now, you who are given to pleasures, who dwell securely, who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me: I shall not sit as a widow, nor shall I know loss of children;’ but these two things shall come to you in a moment, in one day; the loss of children, and widowhood. They shall come upon you in their fulness because of the multitude of your sorceries, for the great abundance of your enchantments. For you have trusted in your wickedness; you have said, ‘No one sees me’; your wisdom and your knowledge have warped you [led you astray]; and you have said in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.’ (Is 47:8,9,10).
Although the above words were spoken against Babylon, they are as relevant today to the equally arrogant and wicked modern nations of Britain and America. They will fall suddenly! (1 Thes 5:3.) And soon.
Because evil reigned in Israel in Elijah’s time, God sent a 3½ year famine (Jas 5:17). But most people did not heed and change. The nation continued its downward moral drift, so the time of punishment was later doubled, and in Elisha’s time, God allowed a 7-year famine (2 Kings 8:1).
The Solution
The spiritually uninformed will think it unreal, but it doesn’t alter truth. God holds the solution to famine.
Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine (Ps 33:19).
-226Thus says the Lord: In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you; I will preserve you... (Is 49:8). ...They shall neither hunger nor thirst... For He who has mercy on them will lead them (Is 49:10).
Those who are open to God, and obedient to Him, have His guidance, help and deliverance.
I have written this basic article because of the dream God gave me:
8th September 2008. M. The solution to famine. In this dream I was told (by God) to rent a stand at an exhibition, and put on a display to raise awareness about famine. [Because famine is coming!] As usual in such exhibits, I was to erect some stands, offering information. I had a booklet entitled Famine, 2007. I was a bit concerned because I thought that we would receive income from this outreach, and since our work is not to physically relieve famine as humanitarian charities do, but to point out its cause and solution, I was concerned that people would find fault with us for receiving money to help famine victims even though we are not helping them physically. But I was shown that it was OK to receive donations (for the work of MM) because we are educating people about the cause and solution to all famine. We give the spiritual solution. Then as I slowly woke up, God put it in my mind that He meant me to write an article entitled The Solution To Famine. Comment: Famine is not caused merely by physical factors alone. There are fundamental spiritual principles that have been broken which lead to famine. Evil rulers are one of the main exacerbating causes in Africa. Meaning: The booklet Famine, 2007 shows that famine is overdue. It is upon the world now and cannot be averted! Malcolm B Heap
